Oxidized sulfur-rich arc magmas formed porphyry Cu deposits by 1.88 Ga

چکیده
Abstract Most known porphyry Cu deposits formed in the Phanerozoic and are exclusively associated with moderately oxidized, sulfur-rich, hydrous arc-related magmas derived from partial melting of asthenospheric mantle metasomatized by slab-derived fluids. Yet, whether similar metallogenic processes also operated Precambrian remains obscure. Here we address issue investigating origin, f O 2 , S contents calc-alkaline plutonic rocks Haib deposit Paleoproterozoic Richtersveld Magmatic Arc (southern Namibia), an interpreted mature island-arc setting. We show that ca. 1886–1881 Ma ore-forming magmas, originated a mantle-dominated source minor crustal contributions, were relatively oxidized (1?2 log units above fayalite-magnetite-quartz redox buffer) sulfur-rich. These results indicate sulfur-rich arc magma mineralization already existed late Paleoproterozoic, probably as result recycling sulfate-rich seawater or sediments subducted oceanic lithosphere at time.

Why large porphyry Cu deposits like high Sr/Y magmas?
Porphyry systems supply most copper and significant gold to our economy. Recent studies indicate that they are frequently associated with high Sr/Y magmatic rocks, but the meaning of this association remains elusive. Understanding the association between high Sr/Y magmatic rocks and porphyry-type deposits is essential to develop genetic models that can be used for exploration purposes. Here we ...
متن کاملRecycling of metal-fertilized lower continental crust: Origin of non-arc Au-rich porphyry deposits at cratonic edges
Recent studies argue that subduction-modified, Cu-fertilized lithosphere controls the formation of porphyry Cu deposits in orogenic belts. However, it is unclear if and how this fertilization process operates at cratonic edges, where numerous large non-arc Au-rich deposits form. Here we report data from lower crustal amphibolite and garnet amphibolite xenoliths hosted by Cenozoic stocks that ar...

متن کاملNew evidence of magmatic-fluid–related phyllic alteration: Implications for the genesis of porphyry Cu deposits
The phyllic alteration in a number of circum-Pacific porphyry Cu-Au deposits is related to high-temperature saline magmatic fluids. This contradicts the widely used genetic models wherein phyllic alteration formed as the result of mixing between magmatic and meteoric fluids. At the Endeavour 26 North porphyry deposit in eastern Australia, the transition from early potassic to the main-stage phy...
متن کاملTempo of magma degassing and the genesis of porphyry copper deposits
Porphyry deposits are copper-rich orebodies formed by precipitation of metal sulphides from hydrothermal fluids released from magmatic intrusions that cooled at depth within the Earth's crust. Finding new porphyry deposits is essential because they are our largest source of copper and they also contain other strategic metals including gold and molybdenum. However, the discovery of giant porphyr...
